Karrie Webb will defend her Evian Masters title this week in Evian-les-Bains, France, as the LPGA Tour begins its European leg.
She\'ll be one of 90 players competing for the $450,000 winner\'s check. A win this week would give Webb her first LPGA title of the year.
She\'ll face stiff competition, however. World No. 1 women\'s golfer Lorena Ochoa will be pursuing her first title in Europe. Ochoa has had an impressive start to 2007, recording three wins in 15 starts and nine top-10 finishes.
Annika Sorenstam, Cristie Kerr, Se Ri Pak and Michelle Wie will also compete. Sorenstam usually plays well at Evian-les-Bains. She has won the Evian Masters twice in seven appearances and finished second once. Kerr is coming off her first major victory at the U.S. Women\'s Open, and Pak recently became only the third LPGA player to win the same event fives, at the Jamie Farr Owens Corning Classic.
Wie is playing in her first event since withdrawing from the U.S. Women\'s Open.
The Evian Masters has also been friendly to rookies in the past. In 2005 eventual Louise Suggs Rolex Rookie of the Year Paula Creamer earned her second professional victory at the event, beating the field by eight strokes. Last year\'s rookie of the year, Seon Hwa Lee, will be competing fresh off her second career victory at the HSBC Women\'s World Match Play Championship last week.
Angela Park and In-Kyung Kim are currently first and second in the race for this year\'s Louise Suggs award, with 763 points and 409 points, respectively. Park has four top-10 finishes this year, and Kim lost to Ochoa in a two-hole sudden-death playoff at the Wegmans LPGA.
The Evian Masters is a so-called winner event, meaning the champion will automatically qualify for the season-ending ADT Championship through the LPGA Playoffs 2007.
